Returns of poor relief and highway expenses

Scope and Content

The Act of 55 Geo.Ill, c.47 (1815) directed that the overseers of the poor and surveyors of highways in each parish or township should make out detailed returns of the amount of money raised and expended by them or their predecessors in the years 1813-15 and 1812-14 respectively. The overseers and surveyors were allowed expenses for their trouble in making out the returns.

The returns were to be transmitted to the clerk of the peace who would send them on to the secretary of state
