The Act of 43 Geo.III. c.144 (1803) for procuring returns relative to the expenses and maintenance of the poor in England directed overseers of the poor and governors of houses of industry to make out written returns detailing the amount of poor rates levied and expended by them for the year ending easter 1803. The returns were transmitted to the secretary of state via the clerk of the peace.
