Returns of poor rate expenditure

Scope and Content

The House of Lords ordered in 1817 a return of the annual poor rate from 1800 to 1817 distinguishing all county and other charges not strictly applicable to the relief and maintenance of the poor. The returns give for each year totals of poor rate, and an analysis of expenditure under legal expenses, county gaol, bridge rate, military families, vagrants, highway rate, fees on road indictments, church and constable rates, and overseers' fees and salaries
