The secretary of state from time to time directed the clerk of the peace to make out returns on various matters. These documents consist mainly of the secretary of state's letters demanding the returns. However, the clerk of the peace's draft replies or duplicate returns are often included. By far the largest group of these records is that of returns of numbers of prisoners tried and convicted at quarter sessions.
