Scope and Content

An Act to facilitate the Performance of the Duties of Justices of the Peace out of Sessions ... with respect to Persons charged with indictable Offences,11 and 12 Victoria, c.42 (1848) gave justices the power to take written statements under oath from prisoners and witnesses, which were later read out in court as evidence. Before 1855, these depositions were filed on the quarter session rolls, but the Criminal Justice Act 18 and 19 Victoria, c.126 (1855) required these to be filed separately.
