Game duty

Scope and Content

By 24 Geo.Ill, c.43 (1784) and 25 Geo.Ill, c.50, (1785) all persons who killed game had to apply to the clerk of the peace for a certificate authorising them to do so, for which a certain amount of stamp duty was payable. The clerk of the peace would annually transmit to the Stamp Office at London correct lists of persons who had been granted certificates. The Stamp Office would then publish these lists once or more a year in the county newspaper. Draft lists are alphabetically arranged and give name and abode of qualified person.
