By 6 and 7 Victoria, c.83 (1843) county coroners were authorised to appoint deputies subject to the approval of the lord chancellor. Duplicate copies of the appointments were to be enrolled with the clerk of the peace. After 1888, county councils appointed coroners, so later appointments of their deputies may be found amongst the county council records.
