Letters of Auguste Vacquerie (1819-1895) to Jules Claretie (1840-1913)

Scope and Content

Vacquerie was a French writer and playwright, brother of Charles Vacquerie, who married Léopoldine Hugo in 1843 and died with her in the Seine river. He studied at Charlemagne College where he met Paul Meurice. He collaborated with him and Hugo's sons to found L'Evénement in 1848 and was imprisoned in 1851 after a political trial against them. A great friend of the Hugo family, he went into exile with them.

Claretie was a French writer, novelist and playwright. In 1885, he became President of the Société des gens de lettres and director of the Comédie Française. He also entered the Académie Française in 1888.
