Scope and Content

Autograph letter to Hugo congratulating him on his verses "Pour les pauvres" (later part of Feuilles d'automne). He asks for seats for the first performance of Hernani, on 25 February 1830, saying that he "will be at the post of danger and victory". This letter indeed shows the enthusiasm caused by Hernani among the Romantics and how Hugo recruited some partisans to prevent his opponents from disrupting the play.

The letter does not have an accession number, but it was bought in the 1960s for 150 francs, from Privat.

Deschamps was French poet and man of letters. Friend of Hugo, he co-founded La Muse Française (1824), in which he signed under the pseudonym of "Jeune moraliste".
