Letter from Hugo to Charles Nodier (1780-1844)

Scope and Content

Nodier, in which Hugo speaks of the 'infamy' of the journalist Genoude in an article in L'Etoile - a reference, apparently, to Genoude's attack on the 'Voyages aux Alpes' made by Nodier and Hugo at a publisher's expense, an expedition which it was assumed Lamartine would join, but he declined the invitation.

Nodier was a French writer and a leader of French Romanticism. He is mostly remembered for his monumental book Voyages pittoresques et romantiques dans l'ancienne France (1820), written with the Baron Taylor. He entered the Académie Française in 1833.

Bought from the Librairie de l'Abbaye on 23 November 1962 for 170 francs. This letter was previously in the collection of Robert Schuman (1886-1963).
