Letter from Marie Sophie Leroyer de Chantepie (1800-1888) to Hugo

Scope and Content

Autograph letter to Hugo expressing the writer's gratitude for the sympathy he had shown her over the tragic loss of a friend. She recalls how, one hour after he had taken home L'Année Terrible to re-read it, she had found him dying. The rest of the letter describes the pain of her grief and loneliness.

Leroyer de Chantepie was a French woman of letters from Angers, and a correspondent of Georges Sand and Flaubert.
