Autograph letter to a friend who is both doctor and poet (perhaps Dr Marchal, cf. VMH/1/377/1-2), thanking him for his verses and his scientific writings. Hugo advises him to read his poem 'La Bouche d'ombre' (published in Les Contemplations, 1856), which explains his thoughts.

Written at Hauteville House, Guernsey.

Bought from Privat on 18 December 1962 for 120 francs.
