Scope and Content

Autograph letter to Hugo. Direy, author of a new French Grammar, asks Hugo to support his request to the Ministre de l'Instruction publique for a posting to Paris from Boulogne-sur-Mer where he and his young English wife are living in sordid penury.

Marked 'r' (répondu) in Hugo's hand.

Direy was a French grammarian, author of a Grammaire Française (1842, re-published in 1844) to which he refers in this letter.
