The Department of the Environment collection includes registers of planning applications from 1934 - 1976. The collection also includes a large number of photographs including a series of images of St Helier from the 1960s and aerial images of the Island from the 1960s - 1990s. Ordnance survey maps and plans, reports and general correspondence are also covered.

Administrative / Biographical History
The Natural Beauties Committee of Jersey was first established in the 1930s. The original department became part of the Island Development Committee, then the Planning and Environment Committee and laterly the Department of the Environment. The Department of the Environment has two main roles. Firstly, to ensure land is developed in a way that enriches the quality of the natural and built environment and enables Jersey to function effectively both economically and socially, in line with the Island Plan. Secondly, to make sure buildings are designed and constructed to safe and environmentally sound standards.
