United States of America Incoming Correspondence

Scope and Content

Incoming correspondence from missionaries to the London Missionary Society headquarters, for the United States of America.

The LMS dealt from its earliest years with missionary societies which were formed in the principal cities of the States of New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania and thereafter mainly integrated in the American Board for Commissioners of Foreign Missions [recorded in file descriptions as ABCFM] based in Boston. Much of the correspondence concerns the transfer of missionaries to the main LMS mission fields in Asia and Africa, for which Robert Ralston of Philadelphia acted as LMS Agent. Towards the end of the series (to 1840) are negotiations about potentially overlapping mission fields of the LMS and AMCFM. Other frequent correspondents were Samuel Worcester, Salem [Massachusetts], Jeremiah Evarts and Rufus Anderson, Boston, Divie Bethune, New York.
