Scope and Content

Left Mauritius on 22nd October [1856]; now within two days of Galle; has recovered from his "affection of the spleen" caused by fever; has seen little of Lebrun; longs for a reunion with his family; uncertainty about plans for the future; sextant smashed - asks that Mr Maclear [Thomas Maclear] is informed of this misfortune; found the Nubia ready to sail for Suez and will sail at 4 o'clock [From Galle, Livingstone sailed to Suez, then to Alexandria where he boarded the Candia; at Tunis he changed to the Elbeji, for Marseilles, then went by rail across France, landed at Dover, and reached London on 9th December 1856].
