Joseph Kam - grateful for receipt of books, some of which he will translate into local language; instances of gospel success in various of the Moluccan [Maluku] islands on his journey; grateful for supply of printing press; translation work; preparation of local helpers (and nine learning the language) for missionary work; many in islands awaiting baptism; help from other missionaries; difficulty of getting to Easterly islands in monsoon season; severe epidemic in Java, 200,000 deaths; translation of Christian writings; letter from king of Siau in the Zangir islands [Kepulauan Sangir, Sulawesi] expressing pleasure on receiving Malayan New Testaments; pressing need of more printing types; helped by newly arrived Dutch missionaries; would be glad of LMS missionaries too, who will keep dietary restraint imposed by tropical climate.
