John Chalmers, Hong Kong - Canton's need; destruction of forts by British; disastrous effects of war; mission work at Canton resumed; family left for Britain

Dr Benjamin Hobson, Hong Kong - destructive fire at , reports of hospital premises etc being destroyed untrue; he moving to Shanghai

James Legge, Calcutta [Kolkata] and Brompton [London] - encloses specimen of Chinese Classics he translated into English; need of new printing office and type foundry in Hong Kong
