Administrative / Biographical History

The Royal Observatory was founded at the Cape of Good Hope in 1820. Thomas Maclear was Astronomer Royal between 1794 and 1879, and arrived at the Cape on 5 January 1834. In 1852, Livingstone studied astronomical surveying with Maclear, who thereafter undertook to examine and correct all of his observations. Easter Saturday [16 Apr?] - 9 May 1854
