Administrative / Biographical History

The General, Municipal, Boilermakers and Allied Trades Union was formed in 1982 by the merger of the General and Municipal Workers' Union and the Amalgamated Society of Boilermakers, Shipwrights, Blacksmiths and Structural Workers. It has since absorbed the Amalgamated Textile Workers' Union in 1985, the North West Lancashire, Durham and Cumbria Textile Workers' Union in 1986, the Greater London Council Staff Association in 1987, the Association of Professional, Executive, Clerical and Computer Staff in 1989, the National Union of Tailors and Garment Workers in 1991 and the Furniture, Timber and Allied Trades Union in 1994. In 1987 it adopted the abbreviated title GMB.

The main archives of the General, Municipal, Boilermakers and Allied Trades Union, including the boilermakers' section, remain with the union at its national college. Some records have, however, been transferred to the Working Class Movement Library, Salford : see Working Class Movement Library, Bulletin, no. 2 (1992), pp. 67-92, for a description of these records. Some records of the National Union of Tailors and Garment Workers are also held in the London Archive, Department of Politics, Queen Mary & Westfield College, London. The records of numerous textile unions are in the Lancashire Record Office.

Custodial History

The General, Municipal, Boilermakers and Allied Trades Union archive includes the records of many predecessors. The initial deposit related to this archive was made in 1978 and accruals are listed below.

  • 29th November 1978 : Associated Blacksmiths, Forge and Smithy Workers' Society annual reports, contribution books, etc. used by A. Trickett to write union history, deposited subject to Boilermakers' consent and collected by Christine Woodland [deposit];
