Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
The establishment of the Nazi regime in January 1933 resulted in theimmediate and massive repression of German communism. Many German communistswere systematically interned or killed by the regime. While most communistparties experienced a notable surge of popular support during this period, the Kommunistische Partei Deutschlands (KPD) failed to recruit virtually anynew members from 1933 until the collapse of the Nazi regime in 1945. However, many German communists kept up their resistance through the distribution ofanti-Nazi literature. Until 1935 most of the literature was printed inGermany, but from this date communists had to rely on materials printedabroad and smuggled into Germany by couriers.
