Administrative / Biographical History

William Henry Stokes, born 1894. Trade unionist and Communist Party activist. Member of the Steam Engine Makers' Society, and elected to the AEU National Committee in 1935. AEU Coventry District President, 1936; full-time AEU Divisional Officer, 1937. member of the Iron and Steel Corporation, 1950-3. Appointed Justice of the Peace, 1950, and Chairman of the Coventry bench from 1966. Died, 1977.

Archivist's Note

The Centre also holds a deposit made by Richard Croucher, labour historian, which contains some further material on Stokes (MSS.180). Authority files exist for William Stokes (GB 152 AAR0810) and Richard Croucher (GBR 0152 AAR0809).

Custodial History

The collection was donated to the Centre by Mrs. J. Satchwell, Stokes' executrix, in 1987 and 1988.
