Scope and Content

From J. Evans in Madeley to Mary Tooth, c/o of Henry Moore, Spitalfields Chapel, London. He takes this opportunity of providing a few details concerning the [worship] meetings; [Richard?] Williams led the first meeting and Miss Morris the second, according to an arrangement made by Mr Powell and Evans. 'He [Powell] invited her [Morris] & I gave up my appointment [to preach] to her. Your sister [Rosamund Tooth] & the friends thought it best to hold the meeting in the barn [converted chapel at Madeley], thinking the room wd be too small & so it would for there was an excellent congregation almost to overflowing. The Lord was found by many to be in his sanctuary. Bro Bailey said he had not felt so much under a sermon in a long time'. Miss Morris returned home the following day.

'Your unworthy brother [Evans himself] endeavoured to supply your place [to preach] last night where there were but a few people, I suppose on a/c [account] of the harvest but the Lord was with his two's and three's'. Spiritual matters are discussed. Detailed reference is made to Evans's business with Mr Jones and Mr Ward[?], concerning leasing a property [malthouse?]. Mention is made of business dealings in Liverpool and Oswestry and to Mr Pritchard, [Richard] Williams and George Railey. Tooth's advice concerning this matter would be welcome. Evans is almost ready to embark into this business, having bought a cart and yearling[?] horse and he must soon inform his uncle that he must find a clerk [to replace Evans?]. Tooth's influence in getting someone to stand as a bondsman for him to raise the necessary capital would be invaluable.
