Scope and Content

[The handwriting is difficult to read at several points in this letter.]

From Cross Lane Head, [Shrewsbury – postmark]. Ludlow found the Alscott family very well and pleased to see her. Lucy[?] is Mrs White’s governess and is not much at home. Mrs J. says that she will take every care of the pulpit, but does not seem inclined to send it away. Mr Barber has held three meetings there although they have had few listeners. The Bridgnorth [Methodists] are doing pretty well.

Her friends received her kindly and wish her to stay with them for a while but she has just received a letter from her husband [William], saying that he is worked almost to death and must have her home immediately. He says that he would normally be pleased for her to stay longer but expects to be very busy next week and must have help. He intends going to her sister’s[?] house this evening and has asked Ludlow to meet him there. Ludlow must therefore ask Tooth to bring her things if she is coming in a week or a fortnight, or alternatively, put them on the Madeley coach, or if she should go to Wolverhampton, she should leave them at Cluett’s[?] as he often visits Birmingham.

Her regards should be passed to Miss Haselwood and Mrs Harper.
