He was ordained and did two curacies, the first at St Peter's, Cockett from 1965 to 1967, the second at Swansea St Mary from 1967 to 1974. He was then the first vicar of the newly-created parish of Llwynderw from 1974 to 1992, before becoming the vicar of Swansea St Barnabas from 1993 to 1996. He served as Chaplain to Singleton Hospital from 1980 to 1995, Secretary of the Diocesan Conference from 1991 to 1995, and Diocesan Director of Education from 1992 to 1995. In 1995, while vicar of Swansea St Barnabas, he was appointed Archdeacon of Gower, and the following year became vicar of Swansea St Mary.
