Commonplace books and papers

Scope and Content

The series consists of a collection of poems, extracts from literature, scenes from plays, quotations and other writings copied out by Alec Guinness, either typed or autograph. Guinness had probably planned on publishing a commonplace book, and A Commonplace Book (2001) was published posthumously. It was based on two notebooks he left behind and a completed introduction text. Although many of the extracts in this selection were in the final published book, the original notebooks and the introduction text are not included.
