Letters from Alec Guinness to Merula Guinness

Scope and Content

Alec and Merula Guinness kept up a regular correspondence between 1938-1945 while Alec was away from home serving in the navy. They corresponded whenever Alec was away from home and there are also letters from his absences between 1945-1999. These files contain Alec's letters to his wife.

Administrative / Biographical History

Piers Paul Read used this correspondence while writing his biography of Guinness's life. Therefore the letters often are accompanied by transcriptions, partial transcriptions or notes on the contents, alongside a reference number and details of the letter on a typed page.
