Scope and Content

The collection contains the business records of the firm and includes day books, cash books, ledgers, wage books, invoice books, expense books, purchase day books, bank books and order books.

Administrative / Biographical History

A weigh beam manufactured by John White in 1715 is preserved by the Company but in 1971 financial records survived only from 1834. The ironfoundry was established after 1918. The records were removed from the old works upon removal to a new site in 2000.

Access Information

By appointment with the Archivist. Access to unpublished records less than 30 years old and other records containing confidential information may be restricted. Special conditions apply to photographs.

Acquisition Information

The collection was given to the Library of the University of St Andrews in 2000, being transferred after contact made through the Business Archive Council of Scotland.

Note

There are items on the NRAS list of the collection which appear not to have been present when the later survey was undertaken. The material transferred in to the library has been checked against the BACS list to ensure that all items listed have been transferred.

Other Finding Aids

A brief survey list compiled by the National Register of Archives (Scotland) was made in 1971 (NRAS 593). This was superseded by a survey done by the Business Archives Council of Scotland which is available but the collection has not yet been fully listed.
