Administrative / Biographical History

Alexander Macgregor was born at 26 Melville Street, Perth on 14th March 1888  . His father James was a manager. He was educated at Northern District School in Perth and at Perth Academy where he was awarded the Duncan Medal as Dux in mathematics. This medal, of silver and gold, was deposited in Perth Museum & Art Gallery in 2006. He then proceeded to study at the University of Glasgow where he graduated MA in 1909  . He took the following subjects: Latin and Logic, 1906-1907; English, Mathematics and History in 1907-1908; Chemistry and Natural Philosophy in 1908-1909. During this period he also undertook a two-year course of teacher training organised by the Glasgow Provincial Committee for the Training of Teachers, qualifying in 1908  . He subsequently taught at Caledonian Road School in Perth before being appointed as headmaster of Invergowrie Public School near Dundee. He was the author of A Modern School Geometry  , published in 1924 by McDougall‰??s Educational Co Ltd, London & Edinburgh. He married Margaret Robertson, MA (Edinburgh) on 26 December 1924, and they had three children, namely James, Christine and Alexander. In 1938 he was appointed as headmaster of Perth Junior Academy, now known as Viewlands Primary, and he retired from that post at the statutory age in 1953. From 1938 until his death he lived at 74 Glasgow Road, Perth. He was appointed an officer in the Cadet Force in 1917, and was also an officer of the Boys Brigade in Perth. He was also a lifelong member of the Guildry Incorporation of Perth, and was Lord Dean from 1955 to 1958. He wrote A Brief History of the Guildry Incorporation of the City of Perth  c 1950. His creative flair was expressed by his interest in calligraphy, and he had some success as a watercolour artist. He died in Perth Royal Infirmary on 7th June 1962  as a result of postoperative bronchopneumonia. (Biography compiled by Dr James D.
