Scope and Content

Records of the Joseph Rowntree Reform Trust (previously the Joseph Rowntree Social Service Trust), comprising records concerning the 1904 foundation of the Trust, its 1939 reconstitution, and subsequent amendments to the Trust Deed, 1903-1969; administrative records, 1904-1992; financial records, 1904-1971; records of JRRT grants and projects in fields including newspaper publishing, social research and political reform, 1903-1990; records concerning relations between the three Rowntree Trusts and the Trusts and Rowntree Company, 1937-1981; and records concerning the foundation and administration of the JRSST Charitable Trust, 1952-1969.

Access Information

Records are open to the public, subject to the overriding provisions of relevant legislation, including data protection laws. 24 hours' notice is required to access photographic material.

Acquisition Information

The archive was deposited at the Borthwick Institute in 2006 by the Joseph Rowntree Reform Trust. Further additions were made to the archive in 2016.

Conditions Governing Use

A reprographics service is available to researchers subject to the access restrictions outlined above. Copying will not be undertaken if there is any risk of damage to the document. Copies are supplied in accordance with the Borthwick Institute for Archives' terms and conditions for the supply of copies, and under provisions of any relevant copyright legislation. Permission to reproduce images of documents in the custody of the Borthwick Institute must be sought.
