Godfrey Drage was born in 1868 in Meanmir, India (Myanmar). He was the eldest son of William Henry and Gertrude Drage. He attended Sandhurst in 1888 and then served in the 52nd Oxfordshire Light Infantry and the 5th Burma Regiment. From 1896 to 1906 he worked in the Burma Civil Service and Political Department. In 1905 he married Dorothy Greaves and retired from the Service to settle in Criccieth, Caernarfonshire. Dorothy was the daughter of J. E. Greaves, a member of a prominent family of the Caernarfonshire gentry. During the First World War, Godfrey received a captaincy in the 7th Royal Munster Fusiliers. He was promoted to the rank of Colonel. He travelled widely and was involved with the Boy Scouts as the Honourary Organising Secretary of the Scouts for Wales and was a County Commissioner. Dorothy Drage was a member of the Women's Institutes movement from 1915, as well as a member of the National Federation of Women's Institutes from the time of its foundation. Godfrey and Dorothy Drage had two children, Dorothy (b. 1906) and Cecily Grace (b. 1909).

The correspondence files between Godfrey and Dorothy Drage were previously arranged in a numbered system. Some individual items within the collection had previously been listed. Captain Drage's Notes on the Was and their Country and an early 19th century account book had been listed as XM2323/1 and XM2323/1/2 respectively; they have been renumbered as XM2323/1/1 and XM2323/1/2. The three maps in the collection and a photo album were also listed earlier. The album retained the same reference number as before, XS1397/1.
