Scope and Content

Letter from Emily Hobhouse [(1860-1926), social activist and charity worker], expressing strong disapproval of the Manchester Guardian’s support of the war. Hobhouse believes that once the opposing forces meet, this will make it difficult to resume conflict, likening the situation to the Boer War; alleges German soldiers are calling regular truces and conversing with [enemy] forces. Hobhouse conveys concern over women's suffering [because of war] as well as press censorship, which she presses [Scott] to report on in the Manchester Guardian. She claims the Socialist Party are holding peace campaigns amongst [British] working classes.
