Scope and Content

A collection of documents detailing the legacies, properties and investments of Edward Caird of Finnart (d.1889), including investment in America, shipping interests, accounts, share certificates, and correspondence 1862-1892.

Administrative / Biographical History

Edward Caird was born in Montrose in 1806. He founded Caird (Dundee) Ltd in 1832. His son, James Key Caird took over the business in 1870 and was a noted benefactor; between 1895 and 1914 he gave 240,940 in donations to institutions and organisations within and outside Dundee, and was awarded a baronetcy in 1913. Edward Caird died in 1889.

The records were transferred from the National Archives of Scotland in 1992 (AccM/279).
