Wynne-Williams, R. A., Papers

Scope and Content

Cambrian Railways Company, register of vessels, Port of Aberdovey, 1895-1932; and notes of ships using Aberdovey Port, 1934-1959.

Administrative / Biographical History

R. A. Wynne-Williams, of Peniarth, Dolgellau, Caernarfonshire, accumulated papers of the Cambrian Railways Company relating to the port of Aberdovey (Aberdyfi), Merionethshire. The company had been formed by the Cambrian Railways Act 1864 from four existing companies. The Aberystwyth & Welsh Coast Railway (A&WC) was brought in 1865, but the Mid-Wales remained outside. The Coast Railway line was opened for traffic from Aberystwyth to Machynlleth and from Aberdovey to Llwyngwril. The line from Aberdovey Station to Llwyngwril was connected to the port of Aberdovey by the Harbour branch in 1863. Aberdovey was already a maritime port when the railways arrived.
