Papers of William Clark, 1933-85

The Clark papers are an indispensable source for the study of the history of the Observer newspaper, the early days of political broadcasting, postwar politics in Britain and the United States and Third World issues. The papers consist of:

• Diaries and notebooks
• General correspondence and papers
• Special correspondence and papers
• Broadcasts, speeches and lectures
• Correspondence and papers relating to publications
• Printed memorabilia and press cuttings
• Photographs and miscellanea
• Additional papers (received 1990), mainly concerned with his Presidency of the International Institute for Environment and Development, 1980-5

William Donaldson Clark (1916-1985) was a journalist and development worker. Details are given in the Dictionary of National Biography.

Entry to read in the Library is permitted only on presentation of a valid reader's card (for admissions procedures see http://www.bodleian.ox.ac.uk/specialcollections).

Most of the collection is open to researchers but material of a recent date (generally from 1970 onwards) is at present restricted.

The papers were acquired in 1986, apart from the additional papers, which were acquired in 1990.
