Wertheim, Baden-Württemberg: material regarding the history of the Jewish population

Scope and Content

Copy letter (German) from Gerti Wachtel (26 May 1997) to her relatives, enclosing a short family history (English) of this well-to-do middle class Jewish family, who were well integrated into the small town of Wertheim, and the events following the Nazi takeover; copy cuttings, photographs and correspondence regarding the memorial to deported Jews at Wertheim and reunion of survivors, [1970-1990].

Administrative / Biographical History

This collection of documentation was generated as a result of the efforts made by the former mayor of Wertheim, Karl-Josef Scheuermann, to trace the fate of the town's Jewish population, to organise a gathering of survivors and to erect a memorial. Included is a memoir of former Jewish residents.
