Scope and Content

Letters from Ben Nicholson to Charles Harrison, initially responding to research requests regarding Harrison's thesis. They went on to work together on the volume published by Thames & Hudson about Nicholson, and on the artist's 1969 retrospective at the Tate, both of which are discussed extensively in the correspondence.

The letters cover a wide range of artistic issues, from Nicholson's own work to his opinions on other artists, art historians, collectors and the public's response to art. They also touch on personal matters in both Harrison's and Nicholson's lives.

The letters from the 1960s were all sent from Brissago, Switzerland. The 1970s letters were sent from Hampstead, London. Postcards used by Nicholson are often reproductions of his own works.
