Scope and Content

Despatch books 1969-1975; work study records c.1970-1983.

Administrative / Biographical History

In 1917, Scottish Co-operative Wholesale Society took over Taybank Works, Arbroath Road, Dundee, from A J Brough & Co Ltd. The Co-operative Wholesale Society (Scottish Division) Ltd was formed in 1973 after the take-over of SCWS by CWS (Manchester) Ltd. In 1982 the Dundee part of the firm merged with Tay Textiles Ltd, and at this time the weaving and sewing shops were split from the spinning operation, which was re-named Tay Spinners. CWS ceased their operations at Taybank in December 1986, and the works are now occupied by a number of different private firms. The companies derived from CWS are Tay Spinners and Tay Weavers. Taybank Works is still owned by CWS (Scottish Division) Ltd, based in Glasgow.
