Undated Copy of Chancery Decree of 12 Geo II

Scope and Content

This records the outcome of a case

between Joseph Wilcocks, now Bishop of

Rochester, complainant, and Coghill

Knapp and others (named), defendants.

Following 6D/24-25 above, Knapp owed the

Bishop £1700 in 1730, but did not pay up

in time. The Bishop expected therefore

to take over the property, but Knapp

first claimed that there were

encumbrances on it, and then that he had

not borrowed any money at all from the

Bishop.

In the ensuing court case, the Bishop

won, and received the messuage called

Johnsons and other lands in

Bletchington, and Knapp was debarred

from all title to the property.
