Administrative / Biographical History
Alban COXE, to whom most of the records described below relate, was a nephew of John Coxe of Beaumont, Hertfordshire and brother of Sir Richard Coxe of Porters Lodge, Wheathampstead, Hertfordshire. He lived at Porters Lodge from 1610 onwards and after 1636 took charge of the royal stables at St Albans. In 1654 after a disputed election, he became M.P. for St. Albans and commanded a troop of horse in Cromwell's army, with the rank of Colonel. He also sat on a local committee for church discipline. At the restoration in 1660, some of his friends (though Royalist in sympathy) requested favourable treatment for him, in view of his lenient attitude towards Cavaliers during the interregnum
