Administrative / Biographical History

Clathick estate (sometimes spelled Clathic) is situated in Monzievaird and Strowan Parish, Perthshire. The papers held document aspects of the administration of the estate from 1813 to 1861. During the period in question Clathick estate consisted of around 1,000 acres, with a mansion.

Clathick came into the possession of the Campbell family by a charter of 21 November 1628, granted by John Drummond, Earl of Perth, to John Campbell, 1st of Ardeonaig and Innergeldie, who was a son of John Campbell, 3rd of Lawers and Beatrix, daughter of Sir Colin Campbell, 6th of Glenorchy.

In 1695, ownership of the estate passed to Jean Campbell, as the only surviving child of John Campbell, 4th of Clathick. She married Archibald Coats, Merchant and Provost of Glasgow, in 1718. When their son inherited the estate, he changed his name to John Coats Campbell.

John Coats Campbell (1721-1804), 6th of Clathick, was a wealthy Glasgow tobacco merchant and one of the founding partners of the Thistle Bank in 1761, as well as Lord Provost of Glasgow 1784-1785. He married Agnes Colquhoun.

During the period covered by the records, the estate was in the ownership of Archibald Campbell, 7th of Clathick (1756-1820). On succeeding his father John Coats Campbell in 1804, Archibald Campbell took the additional name of Colquhoun (his mother's maiden name), and succeeded also to the lands of Killermont (through his mother). He also inherited Garscadden, another estate that had belonged to his mother's family. Archibald Campbell Colquhoun was a lawyer and politician, as well as a landowner. He was Sheriff of Perthshire (1793-1807) and MP for the Elgin Burghs (1807-1810). He also served as Lord Advocate (1807-17) and Lord Clerk Register (1816-1820). Additionally, he was a partner in the Thistle Bank.

On Archibald's death, Clathick Estate passed to his 2nd son, William Laurence Campbell-Colquhoun (1810-1861).

Custodial History

The records in this collection were found amongst historical papers of Bank of Scotland. It is not clear how they came into the Bank's custody. The collection does include a bundle of correspondence with an official of the Central Bank of Scotland, J McLeish. It seems possible the records were deposited with the Central Bank, which was then taken over by Bank of Scotland in 1868.
