File: Museum of Science and Technology

Scope and Content

The file provides a detailed overview of UMIST's involvement with the Museum of Science and Industry. There is material on the earliest initiatives, including the work of Peter Lennox-Kerr, a publisher, who was heavily involved in scoping the proposed museum. The file includes a copy of his report of 1959, as well as later reports of the Museum working party (1966), Donald Cardwell's report of 1969 "Present positions and future plans" and the report by T A Walden and M K Weston for the Museums Association and Carnegie Trust in 1972. Also covered are details of early acquisitions initiatives from Ferranti, Metropolitan Vickers, Beyer Peacock and Lancashire Dynamos, and the search for appropriate accommodation for the Museum, including the acquisition of the Oddfellows Hall in 1968, the first 'permanent' home of the Museum.
