File: IBM 7090 and IBM 1401 Computers

Scope and Content

Papers including correspondence concerning the gift of an army surplus IBM 1401 computer from Worthy Down, and its potential value in the work of the storage and analysis of medical data for the Medical Computer Union and in the assistance of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. A letter of 28 May 1968 refers to the possible use of a Risley IBM 7090 computer by Manchester University in collaboration with other universities in the region. The Computer Board for Universities and Councils decided against the proposal which would have required them to support the running costs for one year.
