File: Dead Sea Scrolls

Scope and Content

File relating to the College's involvement with the Dead Sea Scrolls project. Staff in the University of Manchester's Department of Semitic Studies had been involved in researching the Scrolls, and the so-called Copper or Bronze Scrolls were cut into sections by the College's Professor Henry Wright Baker in 1956 to allow the text to be read. The file includes correspondence relating to Baker’s work (John Allegro, G Lanchester Harding and Wright Baker), including the arrangements for the cuttings and subsequent publicity.
