Zoological Society of London

Scope and Content

Job files and correspondence are arranged in their original order, followed by photographs and drawings.

This sub-group contains the following series: Project files (1960 - 1998); and drawings (1962 - 2000). The records include job files and correspondence relating to Sir Hugh Casson's role as consultant for the overall redevelopment of the zoo, and sketches and photographs relating to the Elephant House and other pavilions.

Administrative / Biographical History

In 1956 Sir Hugh Casson was commissioned to prepare a new development plan for London Zoo in Regent's Park. Although Casson's plan served as a site guide for the new structures that were built over the next two decades, much of his vision was left unrealised. As well as acting as an overall consultant, Cason, Conder & Partners designed the Elephant and Rhino Pavilion (1962-1965), and the Education Centre (1973-75).
