Scope and Content

'What News' Newspaper printed by R. E. Jones in 1889. The firm R. E. Jones was established in Conwy in 1848 in a house in Mount Pleasant. Within a few years larger premises were found in Lower Gate Street and then later again in Rosehill Street. They moved again to a building on the Quay about 1900 and it was considerably extended in 1930.

The North Wales Weekly News had their Colwyn Bay Offices at the Central Library at 5 Station Road for over forty years until they moved to 5 Coed Pella Road. The original member of the family who established the firm back in 1848 was William Jones who was followed in the management of the works by his son R. E. Jones and later, by the two younger sons of William Jones, W. W. Jones and A. Jones. The firm has been associated with notable chapters in the history of Welsh publishing: the 'Cyfres y Fil' series of Welsh classics for instance is known wherever the Welsh language is spoken and many other features in connection with the printing side of the business could be quoted.

R. E. Jones moved to its present site by the flyover in Llandudno Junction in 1972. In 1987, much of the work in the production of the North Wales Weekly News, Llandudno Advertiser, Bangor and Anglesey Mail etc. was done by computer. A Stockport firm took over the newspaper production in 1987.
