Happy Valley, Llandudno

Scope and Content

Opposite the Grand Hotel a colonnaded walk, opened in 1932, leads into the Happy Valley. Tourism started in the Happy Valley area as early as 1860 when Lot Williams built a Camera Obscura on the mound still known as Camera Hill. The Camera was closed in 1964 but it was burnt down by vandals two years later. The Happy Valley Theatre was built in 1933 to replace an earlier structure destroyed by fire. In 1887 the Third Baron Mostyn closed the Happy Valley Quarry and gave the area to the town as a permanent park in commemoration of the Jubilee of Queen Victoria.
