St. Benedict's Church, Gyffin

Scope and Content

The Church dates from the thirteenth century and was built by the Monks of Aberconwy. There is no indication that it replaced anything built earlier. The whole Church was drastically restored in 1858.

The South Door of the Chancel dates from the thirteenth century but the Chancel itself was probably rebuilt and extended in the fifteenth century and at the same time the Nave was extended Westward and the South Porch added.

About 1500 the Nave was extended to the West and a Chancel was added. In the sixteenth century a large South Chapel was added and in the nineteenth century a North Transept was built in place of a seventeenth century North Chancel Aisle.

Gyffin was the birthplace (1501) of Dr. Richard Davies who became Bishop of St. Asaph and St. David's. He was one of the translators of the New Testament into Welsh.
