The Summit Hotel

Scope and Content

This was originally built as a nine bedroomed hotel with an 18 hole golf course in 1909. In 1941 it was requisitioned as a R.A.F. Radar Station. In 1952 it was bought by two men; one of whom was Randolph Turpin, Britain's first middleweight boxing champion. He owned the hotel until 1961, when he committed suicide after a writ for £16,000 of unpaid income tax was served on him.
