Rock Gardens, Happy Valley

Scope and Content

Large boulders, weighing up to six tons each, were placed in position in 1962 for the the 1963 National Eisteddfod. Stones used for a similar ceremony on the same site in 1898 were later incorporated in the Rock Gardens at the rear. These Gardens contain numerous botanical curios, including the Great Orme Cotoneaster, first discovered in 1783, which does not grow naturally anywhere else. The Chrysanthemum Rubellum originated here. It was discovered here in 1929 and now grows successfully in many parts of the world.
